There is something so magical about watching children on the beaches of Dorset.
The moment their feet hit the sand, something shifts. They run. They explore. They collect treasures. They chase waves and follow their curiosity without a second thought.
I often think the beach is one of the few places where children can simply be exactly as they are.
There are no walls, no expectations and no pressure to sit still. Just open space, fresh salty air and endless opportunities for adventure. The beach works with a child's natural energy, not against it.
Working With Their Energy
As a Dorset family photographer, this is one of the reasons I love photographing families by the sea. Rather than asking children to stand still and smile at the camera, I follow their lead. I work with their energy, allowing it to flow naturally throughout the session.
If they want to run towards the water, we run. If they want to dig in the sand, we dig. If they want to collect shells or search for treasures hidden amongst the rocks, we make space for that too.
Children feel most comfortable when they are free to move, explore and play. The beach allows them to do exactly that.
The Magic of the In-Between Moments
The most meaningful photographs are often found in the moments between the moments.
When children are relaxed and engaged in their surroundings, genuine connection naturally follows. There is no need to force smiles or ask them to perform for the camera.
Instead, we create space for real memories to unfold.
Where They Forget the Camera
They settle into their own rhythm without any prompting. They explore, wander, pause and move on again, completely absorbed in whatever has caught their attention in that moment. Without the pressure to pose or perform, their natural energy leads the way. And when that happens, everything feels easy.
The beach holds this beautiful balance of freedom and calm. One moment there’s running and laughter, the next there’s quiet focus as they crouch down to study something small in the sand.
It’s in these unplanned, unforced moments that the most honest family photographs are created. When children are fully themselves, the camera simply becomes part of the background.
