Winter beach maternity photography in Dorset

Dorset maternity photographer

As a photographer, I spend most of my time at the beach, and whenever I talk about winter maternity photoshoots in Dorset at the beach, people assume I’m a little crazy! I get the hesitation, but honestly it’s just as beautiful as summer, if not more so. In fact, I’ll go as far to say winter beach shoots are my favourite and here are my reasons why.

1. Quiet and peaceful beach

Winter transforms the beach into a calm, almost private setting. With far fewer people around, there are no distractions in the background. This quieter environment also makes the experience feel more relaxed and intimate, allowing you to slow down, connect, and truly enjoy the moment, something that’s especially meaningful during a maternity session. Parking is also so much easier!

2. Golden hour light hits different in the winter

There is something so magical about the winter light. It’s softer and lower in the sky, which means the light wraps more gently around you. It creates a dreamy glow without the harshness that summer sunsets can sometimes bring, resulting in flattering, timeless images that feel warm and natural.

3. Better timing for sunrise or sunset

Winter golden hour isn’t just beautiful, it’s also family friendly and so much easier to schedule in. In winter sunrise is much later than in the summer and sunset is much earlier. So you can enjoy that soft, dreamy light without waking up too early or staying out too late.

4. Cosy intimate moments - or embrace the cold

Winter is the season to wrap up. The cooler temperatures make these cosy touches feel natural, creating warm, emotive, and beautifully intimate maternity photos in Dorset. One of my favourite ways to add a sense of intimacy is by finding shelter in the dunes, nestled away from the wind. My beautiful client Ellie here chose to embrace the cold and skip wrapping up, and the results are absolutely stunning. Whether you cosy up or go bold in the winter air, your maternity photos can definitely feel warm and intimate.

5. Dramatic skies and natural textures

Winter skies in Dorset are full of mood and movement, from soft pastels to striking cloud formations, that add depth and emotion to your images. Combined with the textures of sand and sea, they create powerful, emotive images that feel raw and timeless..

“I was so nervous having this photoshoot as i had never done anything like it before, but Sophie made it magical for us. Even though it was our first time meeting Sophie, it was like meeting up with a friend we hadn’t seen in ages. She is so lovely, welcoming, chatty and so easy to talk to. All The photos felt so natural, she left me and my partner to have these special moments together. Every photo is absolutely beautiful, better than I even imagined. I will be recommending her to everyone I know, forever!!! And I will definitely be booking back in myself for more stuff like this. Thankyou Sophie ❤️”
